Why Do Roof Valleys Leak? Causes and Repairs

A roof valley handles more water than almost any other area of your roof. When rain runs down two roof slopes and meets at one channel, it needs a clear, properly sealed path to the gutter. If that channel is damaged, poorly installed or blocked, water can work beneath the shingles and into the roof structure surprisingly quickly.

So, why do roof valleys leak? Usually, the leak is not caused by one dramatic failure. It is often the result of ageing materials, ice, debris, storm damage or a detail that was not installed correctly in the first place. In Winnipeg and across Manitoba, repeated freeze-thaw cycles and heavy snow loads make valleys especially vulnerable.

Why Do Roof Valleys Leak More Often Than Other Areas?

A valley is a high-volume drainage point. Even during a moderate rainfall, water from two roof planes is concentrated into a relatively narrow section. During a spring thaw, that flow can include melting snow, ice and debris at the same time.

Unlike the open field of a roof, valleys also have more cuts, overlaps and fastening details. Each one must be correctly positioned and sealed. A small gap that would not matter elsewhere can become a leak once it sits directly in the path of moving water.

The type and age of the roof matter too. Asphalt shingles eventually lose flexibility and protective granules. Metal valley flashing can corrode, lift or develop holes. Sealants dry out over time. A roof that has handled Manitoba weather for many years may show its first weak point at the valley before problems are obvious elsewhere.

The Most Common Causes of a Leaking Roof Valley

Cracked, missing or worn shingles

Shingles around a valley take more punishment than most. Fast-moving water can erode their surface, while winter temperatures make older shingles brittle. Wind may lift an edge or remove a shingle altogether, exposing the underlayment beneath.

A few cracked shingles do not always mean the whole roof needs replacing. However, if the surrounding shingles are curled, heavily worn or losing granules, a patch repair may only be a short-term answer. An experienced roofer can assess whether the valley can be repaired properly or whether it is time to consider reroofing.

Failed valley flashing or underlayment

Many roofs use metal flashing in the valley to direct water safely down the roof. Other roofs use a closed valley, where shingles cover the valley membrane. Both systems can work well when installed correctly.

Leaks develop when flashing is bent, rusted, punctured or incorrectly lapped. They can also occur when the waterproof membrane beneath the shingles has failed. In some older installations, the valley may not have enough protection beneath the surface materials for the amount of water it carries.

A proper repair often involves removing shingles around the affected section, inspecting the decking and installing new valley protection. Simply spreading roofing cement over the top may slow a leak temporarily, but it does not correct damaged materials or poor water flow.

Nail placement in the water channel

Nails should never be placed where flowing water can reach them. Yet exposed or poorly positioned fasteners are a common valley problem, particularly on rushed repairs or ageing roofs.

Over time, water can follow a nail shaft through the roofing layers. Temperature changes may widen the opening, and rust can make matters worse. The visible nail is rarely the whole problem. A reliable repair checks the surrounding shingles, flashing and underlayment rather than sealing one fastener and hoping for the best.

Debris and blocked drainage

Leaves, twigs, seed pods and roof granules collect naturally in valleys. Once debris forms a dam, water can back up beneath shingles instead of draining into the gutter. This is particularly common near mature trees and on lower-pitch roof sections.

Clearing a valley carefully can prevent a minor issue from becoming a costly repair. Avoid walking on brittle shingles or pulling debris aggressively, as this can dislodge roofing materials. If access is difficult or the valley is already leaking, it is safer to have it inspected by a roofing professional.

Ice dams and freeze-thaw damage

Ice dams are a familiar Manitoba roofing concern. Snow melts on a warmer portion of the roof, then refreezes near colder eaves or within a shaded valley. As ice builds up, meltwater has nowhere to go and can be forced back under shingles.

The visible leak may appear some distance from the valley, including on a ceiling, exterior wall or around a window. That does not mean the valley is not involved. Water often travels along roof decking, framing or insulation before it becomes visible indoors.

Ice dam damage can be reduced with adequate loft insulation, ventilation and safe snow management. Still, if the valley materials have already been compromised, those underlying roofing details need repair before the next thaw.

Storm damage and fallen branches

High winds can lift shingles at the valley edges, while hail can bruise shingles and weaken their protective surface. A branch may dent flashing or knock loose a section without creating an immediate indoor leak. Water then finds its way in during the next heavy rain.

After a major storm, look for displaced shingles, metal exposed where it should not be, piles of granules below downpipes, or debris caught in valleys and gutters. Do not assume a roof is sound because the damage is not visible from the ground.

Signs Your Roof Valley May Be Leaking

A ceiling stain near the top floor is an obvious warning, but it is not the only one. A musty smell in the loft, damp insulation, peeling paint near an exterior wall, or water marks around a chimney or dormer can also point to a valley problem.

Outside, watch for shingles that are lifted, cracked or misaligned along the valley. Rust marks, exposed fasteners and flashing that looks buckled or separated deserve attention. Granules collecting in gutters may indicate shingle wear, especially on an older roof.

A leak that only appears during wind-driven rain or spring thaw can be harder to diagnose. That pattern is still useful information. It helps identify whether the issue relates to water volume, wind direction, ice buildup or a particular failed detail.

What a Proper Roof Valley Repair Involves

The right repair depends on the condition of the roof and the source of the leak. A sound, newer roof with localised damage may only need a section of shingles and valley flashing replaced. If water has reached the decking, damaged wood should be replaced before new roofing materials are installed.

For an older roof, repairing only the visible valley can create a mismatch between new materials and shingles nearing the end of their service life. In that case, a full reroof may offer better value and more dependable weather protection. It also allows the roofing system, flashing, ventilation and drainage details to be addressed together.

Good workmanship matters as much as the material. The valley must be sized and installed for the roof design, with the correct underlayment, shingle overlap and fastener placement. It should direct water cleanly into a functioning gutter system, not towards a blocked or damaged edge.

Preventing Future Valley Leaks

Regular roof and gutter maintenance goes a long way. Keep valleys clear of debris, especially after windstorms and in autumn. Make sure gutters and downpipes are draining freely, because a blockage at the bottom of the roof can contribute to water backing up above.

Have ageing roofs inspected before winter rather than waiting for a stain to appear indoors. Address loose shingles and minor flashing damage promptly. For homes with recurring ice dams, it is worth assessing loft insulation, ventilation and the condition of the roof edge as a complete system.

Avoid treating a roof valley leak as a cosmetic problem. Water entering at this point can damage insulation, roof decking, framing and interior finishes long before the full extent is visible.
